About The Classes:

ShootBane is no-profit instruction held on some weekend days, for a class of 5-9 students, usually (but not exclusively) conducted during Oregon's very few warm / dry months. It is a "passionate hobby" for the instructors and their families, but executed at a professional / military level and has been functioning in one form or another for nearly 20 years. Classes are dictated almost entirely by the weather and, to a lesser degree, via the numbers of students (minimum of 5 and a maximum of 9 per class).

Reasoning? The knowledge / skills learned at the practice facility could be the difference between life and death if they must ever be used. Safely absorbing this information in a windblown, chilly, wet, environment with loaded firearms is "un-fun," can be unsafe, and will blunt the students' learning curve.

Thusly, classes in Oct., Nov., Dec., Jan., Feb., and Mar. are rare but can and do happen.

The practice facility is nine-lanes, covered, with shooting tables and seating, but open air and with outdoor targets. See Photo Gallery Page to view the practice facility.

Where Are The Classes Held?

In Philomath … the academic phase is usually at the Methodist church or the public library and the live-fire facility is approximately 15 minutes from these locations. Exact information, of course, will be provided prior to each class.

Who Can Take This Class?

Anyone with the desire and who is not prohibited, by law, from owning / shooting a firearm.

Outline of a Fairly Typical Class:

  • Meet between 6:00 and 11:00 A.M. -- whatever suits that particular student-group … usually about 9:00.
  • Instruction packets are passed out, some 61 topics are covered, all questions are answered, safety and dry-fire drills are learned, and all application forms are completed. This usually takes 2-3 hours.
  • Drive to the practice facility – six miles from Philomath.
  • The live-fire phase is usually finished in 2-3 hours.
  • Finish Time: About 11:30 if we start at 6:00. About 4:30 if we start at 11:00.
If you are from Benton County:

The class will provide the Oregon application packet.

If you are NOT from Benton County:

An Oregon application is available at your county-of-resident Sheriff's Office ... get two per person in case one gets messed up. "Sheriffs' Shops" are not open on weekends.

You can also download your application from most county sheriff's office web sites.

For non-Benton county residents there is no need to have that form prior to the class -- it can be obtained and completed at any time.

A complete Utah application packet is provided.

You Are Not Required To Bring Anything To The Class:

The course will supply everything. However … You can bring your personal eye / ear protection if you so-choose.

Stuff Not Allowed In The Class:

No … Personal ammo.

No … Personal firearms. If you want to become a better marksman, and / or familiarize yourself with your own firearm, ask about our marksmanship course (see The Marksmanship Course Information Below).

No … Concealed-carry holsters or fanny packs or purses or whatever – those are for the marksmanship course.

Do not buy a self-defense gun before the class.
After this course, you'll have a much better idea of what you, personally, should be carrying – 'what you shoot best. Additionally, you will be directed to dealers who will demonstrate / order / sell you the firearm of your choice, usually at a lower price than you can find on your own.

Donation:

Usually between
$88.00 and $132.00
The ShootBane operation is no-profit. The donation for each class is controlled by our cost of replacement ammo, targets, applications, shooting glasses, headphones, printing, bench-rests, firearms, instructor recertifications, etc., for the next scheduled class. An exact amount is given each time a new class is scheduled and posted to the public and will not change until that class has been completed.

If You Already Have An Oregon Concealed-Carry Permit (Expired Or Active):

You still must take this course, and shoot in this course, in order for the instructor to stamp and sign your application and range (familiarity / competency) card.

Choose Wisely / Carefully When Considering A Concealed-Carry Training Class:

Before taking a concealed-carry permit class carefully research and compare the instructors' qualifications and especially the course content.

The skill / ability you gain from your concealed-carry course might well be the life-or-death factor for you or your most precious loved ones; this is a horrifying fact, played-out-many-times-every day, on today's earth.

Common: Concealed-Carry courses that will allow (but not qualify) a person to apply for a 'permit.

Uncommon: Programs that will make a permit-holder truly hands-on knowledgeable and live-fire competent with multiple types of defensive firearms.

The core of the ShootBane course is (after the detailed academics) to affordably provide the most far-reaching array of live-fire experiences with defensive firearms and require the most extensive hands-on live-fire instruction possible, in the areas of:

  • Real-time safety
  • Professional range conduct
  • Real-life marksmanship
  • The multiple facets of extensive live-fire experience with multiple versions of defensive firearms
